A discussion and Q&A session with the

On Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5, 2008,
we will hold our 36th annual fall book sale. This
sale will include individually-priced books as well
as hardcovers, trade paperbacks, and mass-market
paperbacks. Sunday will be Bargain
Day—everything will be half-price.

On Saturday, August 2, 2008, we will hold a special summer
book sale from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Library’s
Community Room. All books in the Community Room will be
priced at 50¢. During book sale hours, all
individually-priced books in the ongoing sale area will be
reduced by 50%.

Bassist and author Justin Locke presents an inside
look at the world of professional musicians and
world-class musical performances, drawing on his
experiences playing for the Boston Pops and other
orchestras. He will share his sense of humor about
great musical moments and great musical gaffes at
the Friends of the Needham Public Library’s
annual meeting.

Marshall I. Goldman is an economist who has
specialized in the Soviet and now the Russian
economy. He will speak about his new book
Petrostate: Putin, Power, and the New
Russia (Oxford University Press), a timely
examination of the resurgence of Russia in an
environment of sharply increasing oil prices. His
book explores how Vladimir Putin has exploited the
favorable oil market of the last decade to
strengthen Russia's financial position and remake
the Russian economy.

In this program just two days before the Red Sox
home opener, several authors contributing to a
forthcoming book will revisit how, back in the day
when Boston was home to two professional baseball
teams, the National League Boston Braves and the
American League Boston Red Sox almost played each
other in the 1948 World Series.

Join author Joyce Antler for an entertaining and informative
presentation and discussion of the history of the Jewish mother and
her paramount role in her family. Professor Antler will talk about
her book You Never Call! You Never Write! A History of the Jewish
Mother.

Before the arrival of electronic computers, the term
“computer” usually referred to a person,
someone who did mathematical calculations. Well into
the twentieth century, such work was done mostly by
hand. The focus of David Alan Grier’s lecture,
and book by the same title, is on the people who
took us from hand calculation, through mechanical
calculators, to electronic computers. Even if you
don’t know a binary symbol from a decimal
digit, the stories are fascinating.
